BODY Low-Alcohol Vodka
Travel Distilled reviews BODY Vodka, the new female-founded low-alcohol vodka that has 25% less alcohol than regular vodka.
I’m not normally a fan of low-alcohol vodkas or other spirits, as to me it’s like drinking coffee without the caffeine, or veggie burgers. They’re neither one thing nor the other. But BODY Vodka had some other things going for it too, so I was happy to give it a try.
BODY Vodka Founders
For a start, BODY was female-founded and is female-owned and female-operated, which is a good thing as we need as much diversity in the spirits business as possible.
How Is BODY Low-Alcohol Vodka Made?
Hailing from North Carolina, BODY Vodka is ten-times distilled using non-GMO corn from Indiana. It’s blended with water that’s been softened with limestone and alkaline with the aim of giving it a smoother taste. To add a dash of sweetness the distillers use organic bee-pollinated agave nectar, but no other sweeteners or additives.
The company is also striving to be as sustainable as possible by using a zero-loss agricultural refiner, by recycling 100% of the water used in the process, and by sourcing their corn from local farmers not giant corporations. Their packaging is also produced as sustainably as possible, and for every tree that the packaging uses, twenty more are being planted through their global reforestation partners.
How Strong is this Low-Alcohol Vodka?
Vodka is typically bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof), though Smirnoff makes their 100 Proof Vodka (50% ABV) and there’s a Polish vodka that weighs in at 96% ABV (192 proof), though no-one in their right mind would sip that neat. It’s meant for mixing. Drink spirits that are too strong and you could end up with alcohol poisoning.
Not with BODY Vodka, though, which is bottled at 30% ABV (60 proof) which the makers point out is 25% less alcohol than normal. A typical serving of 1.5 fluid ounces will set you back 75 calories.
Tasting BODY Vodka
BODY Vodka comes in a chunky but unfussy bottle with a plain and simple label. It’s definitely a hype-free zone. On the nose the spirit is light and neutral, with none of the medicinal hints you get with cheaper vodkas.
On the palate it’s very pleasant too, providing a smooth sip with just that dash of sweetness. I got a sense of citrus, too. If you didn’t already know it was a low-alcohol vodka, you’d be hard-pushed to tell if you were drinking it neat or on the rocks.
Where you do notice is in a cocktail. I tried it with a Q Bloody Mary Mixer that I’d already tried with a regular vodka and it produced a perfect Bloody Mary. For me, the BODY version was a little too weak. Admittedly I like my cocktails strong, and the whole point of BODY Vodka is that it’s not aimed at people like me. However, it is a darn good vodka and if you want to cut back on your intake this is a great way to do it.
Low-Alcohol Vodka Cocktails
The vodka is also designed for use in cocktails, if you’re a drinker who doesn’t like them overly-strong. You can still enjoy all the flavors of your favorite cocktail but without the full alcoholic kick. The BODY website provides lots of cocktail recipes, though they’re mainly classic cocktails like a Vodka Martini or Bloody Mary but made using this low-alcohol vodka instead.
