Canned Vodka Sodas Review

If at first you don’t succeed, keep drinking. That’s the lesson I learned from sampling these canned vodka sodas from CANTEEN Spirits which come in six different flavors: watermelon, ruby red grapefruit, black cherry, strawberry, lime, and cucumber mint.

Strawberry Vodka Soda

When the box of samples arrived I was like the kid in the candy store – which one should I try first? I stuck them all in the fridge and that evening picked one of my favorite tastes:Strawberry. Oh dear. For me it was sickly sweet, like an artificial candy flavor, although if you like candies you might like it.

Lime Vodka Soda

A few days later I was again in the mood for a refreshing vodka soda, with the weather where I live in Southern Arizona warming up nicely. I picked out the Lime Vodka Soda, but this was the opposite of the Strawberry – far too tart and sour for my taste. It improved with a dash of orange juice and an extra slug of vodka, but it wasn’t something I’d want to drink again.

Cucumber Mint Vodka Soda

I admit that after the first two disappointments, the remaining cans languished in the fridge for a few weeks, till the command came down from on high: ‘We need to get those cans out of the fridge!’ My usually patient wife has this quaint idea that a fridge is for keeping food in.

Cucumber Mint sounded refreshing, so I gave these CANTEEN Spirits one more go. Hmmm. What’s this? It was delicious, the summery taste of both cucumber and mint were very subtle, though I added a shot of vodka as I like my drinks to be on the strong side and these all come in at only 5% ABV.

Healthy Drinking

These vodka sodas actually make for fairy healthy drinking – provided you don’t go adding too much extra vodka to them, like me. They’re zero sugars, zero sodium, zero carbs, and only 99 calories per 12 fl. oz. can. They’re also Certified Gluten-Free, Verified None-GMO, and the can linings are BPA-Free. If you like healthy-drinking, these are a lot better than most of the stuff you’ll find in the big grocery stores.

Other Flavors

But was the Cucumber Mint flavor the exception? No, I’m pleased to say. I was now keen to try them all. The Ruby Red was equally refreshing and delicious, with the gentle grapefruit taste, as was the Watermelon. I knew I’d like the Watermelon as soon as I pulled the ring and the fizz of the soda brought a very light watermelon aroma that definitely said ‘drink me’.

The final flavor was the best of all, the Black Cherry Vodka Soda. It had that pleasing mix of tart and sweet, but not too much of either. It is artificial flavoring, not the real thing, but mostly these vodka sodas pulled it off.
