Crown Royal Canned Whisky Cocktails
These three Crown Royal canned whisky cocktails are the first ready-made cocktails produced by the famous Canadian whisky company.
The Crown Royal company was founded in 1939 specifically to produce a whisky (the Canadian spelling) to celebrate the Canadian tour by the King and Queen of England. Until the 1960s you could only buy it in Canada, but since then it’s become the best-selling Canadian whisky in the United States.
This year it’s decided to enter the ever-expanding canned cocktail market with three whisky cocktails – a simple whisky and cola, a cocktail with Washington apples, and a Peach Tea whisky cocktail. I recruited my wife, who discovered a liking for a wee dram while researching a driving guide to Scotland, to share the cocktails with me.
I wouldn’t normally comment on the cans that canned cocktails come in, as unlike bottles, a can is just a can. However, these cans are very classy and well designed, especially the royal purple for the whisky and cola cocktail. The Washington Apple cocktail can is an attractive shade of green, and the Peach Tree can is… well, just peachy. All the cocktails are 7% ABV (14 proof).
Crown Royal Canned Washington Apple Whisky Cocktail
I was surprised by how pink this was when I poured it, not a colour you associate with apples. However, it does have cranberries in it too. Or rather, to be precise about it, it has apple and cranberry flavorings, and is colored with vegetable juice.
One sip of this and my wife said: ‘Too sweet, it’s all yours.’ It shows how subjective tasting is. I saw her point but to me it was only slightly sweet, coming naturally from the taste of the apples (which was predominant) and the cranberries (a little more subtle). Oh yes, it did taste of whisky too, though at 7% ABV it would take a while for you to get a buzz out of these.
Crown Royal Canned Peach Tea Whisky Cocktail
The Peach Tree cocktail combines peach flavor and brewed tea. I expected not to like this as it sounded like it would be sweet, but actually the tea flavor counteracted the natural sweetness of the peaches and it turned out to be an unusual and pleasant drink, though again benefitted by an extra shot of whiskey.
Crown Royal Canned Whisky and Cola
I’m not sure why anyone would want to buy a canned Whisky and Cola when you can put one together yourself in a minute, but I am sure that a huge company like Crown Royal has done its homework and discovered that there is a market for it. It would certainly be popular at picnics and tailgate parties.
All I can say about this one is that it smells and tastes like a standard whisky and cola cocktail. Nothing more, nothing less. It’s the same 7% ABV as the other two cocktails and for my tastes was a little weak, but nothing that an extra shot of whisky couldn’t cure.
Summing Up
In short, these are three perfectly pleasant canned cocktails, but not in the same league as, say, Crafthouse Cocktails or some of the Cutwater canned cocktails, which are also cheaper (and stronger!). If you’re a Crown Royal fan, give them a try… but have a bottle of Crown Royal standing by to give them a booze boost.
