Dano’s Dangerous Pineapple and Jalapeno Tequila
Travel Distilled reviews Dano’s Dangerous Pineapple and Jalapeno Tequila, the only flavored tequila in their range and infused with natural fruit.
I recently reviewed Dano’s Dangerous Tequila Anejo and described it as ‘one exceptional tequila’. A while back I also reviewed a Jalapeno Pineapple Margarita ready-made cocktail in a small bottle from a Texas company called On the Rocks. My verdict on this was that I could drink it all night long (though probably shouldn’t), while my wife wanted to know where we could get some more to serve when friends came round. Could this match up to those exceptional drinks?
Dano’s Dangerous Pineapple and Jalapeno Tequila
This release from Dano’s isn’t a cocktail, it’s a full-blown tequila – well, 36% ABV, so not quite full-strength – that has been infused with natural pineapple and jalapeno and is ready to drink or turn into a cocktail. It’s made using Dano’s 100% agave Blanco Tequila.
The first thing to say is that the color is slightly darker than it appears to be in the photos, being more of a dark straw color rather than pale.
When I first came across the combination of pineapple and jalapeno I thought it sounded weird, but far from it. It’s one of those matches made in heaven, and whoever first thought of it definitely deserves a pat on the back.
On the nose the pineapple comes over strongly, almost like sniffing a glass of fresh pineapple juice that you might sip at breakfast. It’s bursting with those pineapple notes, with lots of creamy vanilla too, but strangely enough there’s hardly any hint of earthy agave, nor of jalapeno. It’s a tequila that smells more like a fruit juice… but don’t be fooled!
Tasting Dano’s Dangerous Pineapple and Jalapeno Tequila
Sipping it, the drink does get a little more complex. The sweet pineapple juice is definitely there, but now’s the time for the jalapeno to put in an appearance. It’s subtle rather than strong, but a good balance, with the jalapeno become more evident on the finish. Oh yes, your throat says, there’s the jalapeno, with a pleasing warming sensation.
How to Drink Dano’s Dangerous Pineapple and Jalapeno Tequila
You can certainly sip this neat, though one is probably enough. You could definitely serve it as an unusual tequila to your guests, but after one shot taken neat you might want to switch to having it on the rocks or in a cocktail.
Pineapple and Jalapeno Tequila Margarita
The obvious tequila cocktail to try is a margarita, so I did. I threw together my usual house margarita, but used this tequila instead. The result was excellent, adding a bit of fire to the sweet and sour of the regular margarita, with a hint of smoky chipotle.
In fact Dano’s has a margarita recipe on its website for a spicy margarita, pretty similar to what I made. They also suggest using this tequila to make a sangria, as well as El Burro Loco, or the Crazy Donkey, a kind of riff on the Moscow Mule, which also sounds tasty. This tequila should give the drink a bit of a kick, so to speak.
Pineapple and Jalapeno Tequila Awards
Don’t just take my word for it that this is a tequila well worth checking out, just look at the awards that it’s won so far:
- Double Gold, 2020 SIP Awards International Spirits Competition
- Gold, 2019 WSWA Tasting Competition
- Double Gold Medal, 2018 SIP Awards International Spirits Competition
