Jalapeno Pineapple Margarita Review
This ready-made Jalapeno Pineapple Margarita cocktail from the On the Rocks company from Dallas in Texas is one of the tastiest cocktails I’ve had in a long time.
To be honest, I’d tried a few of their ready-to-drink cocktails over the last few months, and I wasn’t totally wild about them. They were using quality spirits, such as Larios Gin and Effen Vodka, but the end results were a little too sweet for my tastes. That doesn’t mean they’re bad, and you should certainly try them for yourself, but I prefer drinks that are a little less sweet.
The first one I really liked was their Old Fashioned, made with Knob Creek bourbon and working out at a decent-strength 35% ABV. You could really taste the bourbon, and the cherry and orange in the mix. Although it also used cane sugar for sweetness, it was way back in the blend and I’d certainly buy a batch of these bottles to have on hand.
I’d serve this to friends who like a whiskey cocktail, and if I didn’t reveal that it was out of a bottle I’m sure they’d never guess. It also handily comes in 100ml, 200ml, and 375ml bottles, the bottles being nice and chunky, and definitely saveable for re-use somehow.
I’ve been a little wary of the trend for ready-made cocktails in cans and bottles, though there are certainly some excellent examples around such as the Jack Daniel’s Lynchburg Lemonade I reviewed not long ago.
Jalapeno Pineapple Margarita Review
But now I have been totally won over by this Jalapeno Pineapple Margarita Cocktail. I’d tried the regular Margarita from On the Rocks, and thought it was so-so. It had that sweetness that I don’t like, and I felt that margaritas are so easy to make, and you can make them to your own taste, that it wasn’t worth buying a ready-made one.
This Jalapeno Pineapple Margarita is a whole other thing, though. It was an absolute out-of-the-ballpark smash in our house. It uses triple-distilled Tres Generaciones tequila, with triple sec, natural flavors, and colored with fruit juice. This is the kind of vague description I’m normally wary of, but the proof is in the drinking
And in the drinking it is fantastic. The nose is full of pineapple, very light and fresh, with only a slight hint of the fiery potion in the glass. The hot jalapeno peppers really come through when you drink it. The balance of pineapple and pepper – not two ingredients I would think of together – was amazing. I’ve told several drinking buddies about this mix, and they’ve all looked at me as if I was out of my mind. ‘Jalapenos and pineapple? Really?’
The cocktail is only 20% ABV, which is very low alcohol compared to their 35% ABV Old-Fashioned, yet it tastes just as strong. OMG, I thought, I could drink this all night long, that pineapple and jalapeno combination is such a winner. I shared it with my wife and she’s totally won over too, and immediately says to me: ‘Can you get this in big bottles? I’d buy this for us or when we have friends round. We have to learn how to make this.’ That’s how good it is.
Unfortunately you can’t get it in really big bottles, as like the Old Fashioned it comes in 100ml, 200ml and 375ml bottles, though the 375ml would serve a fair few cocktails.
