With ‘dry January’ firmly behind us, Georgia offers spirit-lovers the best spots to kick back with a drink and (legally) toast the one-hundred-year anniversary of Prohibition in the USA.
Here are the best places to sip and savor Georgia’s favorite tipples, from moonshine and muscadine wine to tripled distilled craft liquor:
Museums Can Be Fun!
Visit The American Prohibition Museum in Savannah. The only museum in the United States dedicated to the history of Prohibition, The American Prohibition Museum boasts interactive exhibits which showcase the passing of the 18th Amendment and its thirteen-year impact on the nation. Visitors can also pull up a chair at the museum’s authentic speakeasy, 220 Congress Street Up, which offers Prohibition-era cocktails (and mocktails) that can trace their origins back to the early 1900’s. Don’t miss: Try the Bathtub gin – actually served in a little porcelain bathtub!
Sample craft moonshine at Still Pond Vineyard, Winery & Distillery in Southwest Georgia. Still Pond offers tastings of 11 award-winning wines, tours of the processing facility, and also hosts three wine festivals annually. Alongside wine, Still Pond creates unique spirit blends from muscadine grapes. Check out Grandaddy Mimm’s Distillery and Gift Shop in Blairsville. Founded by Appalachian moonshiner Jack “Mimm” McClure and once famed for its quality bootleg spirits, in 2012 McClure’s grandson and country musician, Tommy Townsend, began recreating his grandfather’s original recipes (legally) on stills designed by McClure himself. Don’t miss: The 140-proof Mule Kickin’ High Octane Moonshine or brand new 96-proof Blackberry Moonshine.
The Dalton Distillery isn’t just making moonshine! They also have a sunflower seed whiskey and continue to use a traditional 100-year-old recipe crafted by pioneer producer Grandpa Alvin. Don’t miss: Their signature spirit TazaRay, which is aged in used bourbon barrels, and is the first gluten free, sunflower-seed spirit.
Join ASW Distillery’s “Adult Field Trips”. Take a tour of the distillery and sample select bourbons, brandy and their ever-popular white American Spirit Whiskey. Don’t miss: The Fiddler Bourbon Whiskey, aged in-house using methods unique to each batch — from quarter casks, to Georgia heartwood staves.
Take a tour of the Lazy Guy Distillery. Crafting sipping bourbons, rye whiskey and even “white lightning”, their Whiskey 101 Tour includes a guided tour of the production facility and a chance to try three samples of hand-crafted whiskey. Don’t Miss: The 90-proof slow-aged Side Track Bourbon made of locally sourced grains and distilled on site.
