Aberfeldy History

Aberfeldy Distillery was founded in 1896 by John Alexander Dewar and his brother Tommy Dewar, sons of John Dewar Sr., who established Dewar’s blended whisky. The distillery was built to meet the growing demand for Dewar’s whisky and to ensure a consistent supply of high-quality single malt for their blends. Designed by renowned distillery architect Charles Doig, Aberfeldy was strategically located near the Pitilie Burn, a water source known for its purity and mineral-rich qualities, which contribute to the whisky’s distinctive flavor.

Over the years, Aberfeldy has maintained its traditional production methods while embracing modern innovations. The distillery’s four copper pot stills and wooden washbacks are still in use today, preserving the craftsmanship that has defined Aberfeldy for over a century. In 1998, Aberfeldy launched its first official single malt bottling, cementing its reputation as a standalone brand.

Visiting Aberfeldy

Aberfeldy Distillery warmly welcomes visitors, offering an immersive experience into the world of whisky-making. The distillery tour takes guests through the entire production process, from mashing and fermentation to distillation and maturation. Visitors can explore the historic still house, warehouses, and the Dewar’s World of Whisky, an interactive museum that showcases the history of Dewar’s and Aberfeldy. The tour concludes with a tasting of Aberfeldy’s core range, usually including the 12-year-old, 16-year-old, and 21-year-old expressions.

The distillery also features a well-stocked shop where visitors can purchase exclusive bottlings, merchandise, and gifts. For those looking to relax, the café offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside, along with locally sourced food and drink.
