VIVIR Tequila Reposado
VIVIR Tequila Reposado is one of three tequilas from the VIVIR brand and is made in Jalisco in Mexico using 100% blue agave.
To cut to the chase, I took this VIVIR Tequila Reposado and a few other spirits to share with two friends when we rented a cottage in Wales for a week. There was an immediate thumbs-up for the tequila, with one friend – who is Scottish, by the way – saying she would rather sip this than whisky. If that isn’t praise, I don’t know what is. What I do know is that the bottle was almost empty by the end of the week.
The VIVIR Tequila Story
VIVIR Tequila has an unusual history, as the company was born not in Mexico or the USA, but in the UK. Two friends bemoaned the lack of good tequila in the UK several years ago, and the fact that tequila didn’t have a particularly good image as a premium spirit.
In 2016 they decided to do something about it, and produce their own tequila which would show that good tequila can hold its own with any other spirit. It took them three years to source their tequila and get the recipe they wanted, settling on the fifth-generation, family-run Casa Maestri distillery to make it for them.
By 2019 they were ready to launch their Blanco Tequila in the UK. They have been winning awards ever since, with a remarkable collection of medals showcased on their website. They had to wait for their Reposado and Anejo to age, of course.
VIVIR Tequila Reposado
VIVIR now has three tequila expressions, and this Reposado is made from aging their Blanco Tequila in ex-bourbon American oak casks for 6 months. I don’t know whose bourbon the barrels previously held but I’d like to get my hands on some!
Making VIVIR Tequila Reposado
VIVIR have their own blue agave fields in the highlands of Jalisco in Mexico. They grow their own agave for nine years, till they’re mature, and then cook them in clay ovens. The spirit is later blended with volcanic spring water from a well at the distillery.
Tasting VIVIR Tequila Reposado
The tequila is immediately appealing on the nose, with a lovely and rich blend of strong vanilla and caramel, with an earthiness from the agave, buttery notes, and some cinnamon and pepper spiciness. It’s a total delight.
Tasting it, it gets even better. Everything seems richer and deeper, the spices step forward a little more strongly, and throw in some chocolate and butterscotch too. If you never thought you could sip a tequila neat, you have to try this. It will convert you, as my friends discovered in Wales. In fact I would only sip this neat, or with an ice cube, as it’s far too good to get lost in a cocktail. It’s one of the best tequilas I’ve ever tasted.
