Vodka Soda in a Can
Travel Distilled tries VAQIT’s ready-to-drink vodka sodas in a can, including White Peach Ginger, Strawberry Guava, and Clementine Pineapple flavors.
There are so many exciting RTD cocktails in a can these days, so why would I want to try these new ready-to-drink flavored vodka sodas with a strange name, VAQIT? There are two reasons.
The first reason is that they come from Denver, a city I absolutely love, home to so many fine breweries and distilleries, like Stranahan’s and Leopold Brothers. Denver usually produces quality food and especially quality drink.
The second reason is that I like what I read about them, though that’s also connected with the first reason. There’s no added sugar, and no added sodium. They use a quality vodka that’s distilled six times from corn from Illinois.
There are at most 100 calories per can. This doesn’t bother me, but my wife likes low-cal cocktails, and so do many other people.
These vodka sodas in a can are also all 4% ABV (8 proof). Again, this suits my wife, who doesn’t care for overly strong cocktails. To me, 4% is on the verge of being a mocktail. 4% is the strength of a weak beer. But there’s an obvious hack for that!
Vodka Soda in a Can Flavors
These are also flavored vodka sodas. You have to be very wary with flavored anything. This is where you really need to read labels. Artificial flavors can have some really harmful stuff in them, stuff you really should not be putting in your mouth. Do you think bacon-flavored vodka actually has bacon in it? Or is it a chemical compound that tastes like bacon but might be harmful?
Natural flavors are fine and, having read the VAQIT labels, I saw nothing to put me off. All Natural Flavors, it says, and there are no mysterious ingredients with long chemical names hiding nasty things.
Tasting these Vodka Soda in a Can
This is all well and good but the bottom line is always – are these worth buying and worth drinking? And the simple answer is yes.
There are currently three flavors, with more on the way. We tried the Clementine Pineapple Vodka Soda first. The citrus and pineapple tastes were pleasingly subtle, and these RTDs are obviously aimed at people who like vodka soda rather than being hit over the head with a flavor-bomb.
The White Peach and Ginger was the same – just enough sweet peach taste to balance the slightly spicy ginger. My only complaint is that at 4% the sodas tasted quite weak to me, though my wife was perfectly happy with having a light cocktail before dinner. The answer to that is easy, though – just add an extra shot of vodka.
The advantage of the low-alcohol is that if you drink them ‘as is’, you could have them any time of day, or at brunch, when you might not want a full-blown cocktail. And you can’t criticize something for being low-alcohol when it’s been deliberately made that way.
The only one we didn’t overly care for was the Strawberry Guava. We like both those flavors but it came over to us as a little on the sweet side. It didn’t stop us drinking it, but it’s not one we’d order again – unlike the others, which we’d definitely be happy to try. With a little something extra for me!
