Volcan de mi Tierra Reposado Tequila

Distilled in the shadow of the Tequila Volcano, this new reposado from Volcan de mi Tierra is another outstanding tequila.

Detail from the bottle of Volcan de mi Tierra Reposado tequila

I’ve been a fan of Volcan de mi Tierra tequilas ever since visiting what was then a brand new distillery a few years ago. It wasn’t just the taste of their tequilas, which were exceptionally good, but also the passion and the plans that everyone had for the company.

Attention to Detail

It was the attention to detail, too. Every bottle is carefully hand-labelled – and I even had a go at labelling one myself, to discover just how careful you have to be. The base of every bottle is in the shape of the Tequila Volcano, which you can see from the distillery. The Volcán de Tequila stands 9,580 feet (2,920 m) above sea level, and is a magnificent sight. It also inspires the name of the company, which in English means The Volcano of my Earth.

The Volcan de mi Tierra Range

I’ve already reviewed the Volcan Blanco, which I thought was one of the best blancos I’ve tasted in years, and their later release of a cristalino. What’s a cristalino? It’s a style of tequila that some distillers are campaigning to be made into an additional official new tequila category.

A cristalino is either an añejo (aged) or extra añejo (extra aged) tequila that has been filtered. In the case of Volcan de mi Tierra it’s actually a blend of the two, one aged in ex-whiskey barrels, the other in barrels that previously held cognac, and it’s an exceptionally good tequila. When I heard that Volcan were now ready to release their third expression, a  reposado, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on a bottle. For me, now, the release of a new tequila from Volcan has definitely become an event.

Making Volcan de mi Tierra Reposado

As a premium tequila the Volcan reposado is of course made from 100% blue agave, these being from the highlands of Jalisco. The distillery is based in the lowlands, and they were planting their own blue agave fields when I visited. It will be another exciting time when those plants reach maturity and can be harvested. What kind of tequila will they produce?

The reposado is a tequila that has been ‘rested’, and in the case of Volcan de mi Tierra it’s for 135 days in new casks made from American and European oak. The two batches are then blended, and the tequila is bottled at 40% ABV.

Tasting Volcan de mi Tierra Reposado

The bottle is the same as other Volcan bottles, with that shape of the volcano in the base, made even more attractive by the color of the reposado, somewhere between straw and gold.

On the nose the reposado is a delightfully subtle mix of honey sweetness and smoke. It’s a very light smokiness, not as strong as a peaty whisky, but more like sitting round a small campfire – which would be the perfect place to sip this tequila.

There are some peppery notes too, which also come through on the palate. Sipping it, there’s still that honey sweetness, joined by some tropical fruit and perhaps a little tobacco mingling with the smoke. The finish is perfectly smooth with a lovely mix of honey, pepper, and campfire smoke as it goes down. Another winner from Volcan de mi Tierra, and one I’ll be saving for sipping.
